Job Title: Weekend Visitor Services Attendant

Part Time Position, 8-16 hours weekly. Primarily Weekend Hours
The Visitor Services Assistant works directly with garden visitors and volunteers. As a member of the small staff of a young organization, the Visitor Services Assistant will work as a member of a team of paid staff and volunteers.
Duties include greeting and assisting visitors, act as the primary staff support person for BGO volunteers when on duty, ensure that accurate attendance records are kept and that daily transactions are accounted for.
This job requires exemplary customer service skills, a hospitable and safety conscious mindset, and the ability to work independently in a challenging, fast-paced environment. This position requires the ability to work outdoors in a range of weather conditions. The hours of this position are 9:00am to 5:00pm on Saturdays and/or Sundays. One or two Weekend Visitor Services Assistants may be hired to meet the needs of the Garden.

Job Title: Horticulturist/Head Gardener

Full Time Position
This person will be performing a variety of horticultural duties involved in the maintenance of gardens and greenhouse. We are seeking an individual that is knowledgeable, experienced, proficient and hard working.
- Responsible for the daily care and maintenance of a wide variety of plant material and specialty collections;
- Assist with seasonal garden design;
- Research and order plant materials as needed;
- Experience in plant production and greenhouse management;
- Maintain accurate plant collections database and prepare plant identification labels;
- Assist with coordination of volunteer participation;
- Ability to organize, multi task, prioritize, self motivate, and ability to work on short notice projects;
- Good people and public speaking skills;
- May include some evening and weekend hours.
Minimum Qualifications: This position requires a minimum of an Associate’s Degree and 2 years hands-on experience or a Bachelor’s Degree. Familiarity with botanical plant nomenclature and ability to research same. Has the ability to work outside for 8 hours and can continuously work, stand, bend and/or stoop on level ground and slopes. Has the ability to push, pull and/or lift 50 pounds according to work requirements.

Meet Executive Director Rae von Holdt
Rae von Holdt was named Executive Director on December 11, 2009.
She served as the Executive Director of Iowa Arboretum in Madrid, Iowa for seventeen years. Iowa Arboretum consists of a 40-acre ‘living library’ plant collection and a 338-acre refuge highlighted by walking trails traversing woodland forest and native plant communities.
Previously, she served as Director of Development at Terrace Hill Foundation, the historic home of the Governor of Iowa in Des Moines.
Most recently, she served as Director of Development at Wesley Retirement Services in Johnston, Iowa.
Her work has been recognized by the Iowa State Horticultural Society and the American Society of Landscape Architects.
